The august sun beat down on the youth walking across the large empty lot.  A normal sight save the fact that the youth walked with a cane and a small limp.  The first day of high school had been harsh and all the wanted to do was get home.  Home from the numerous insults that had been slung at them throughout the day, and not just because of the cane.  In fact mostly it was because they were shorter than everyone and in several higher grade classes everyone assumed they were younger and had been skipped ahead grades, even though they weren’t.

“Oi, kid,” a voice came from behind as they heard several footsteps coming up from behind them, “what do you think you were doin in class making me look like a fool?”

“So your sayin yah didn need help lookin like a fool?” the shorter teen tried to sound nonchalant as several larger teens surrounded them.

“You think you’re some kinda wise guy don’t you?” the one who spoke before placed a hand on the shorter kids shoulder in an almost comforting manner, “Normally I like wise guys… but you…” a wicked grin spread across his face, “you really piss me off!” his voice boomed as his fist connected with the shorter kid’s stomach.

The shorter kid fell to the ground barely able to keep hold of their backpack, coughing and gagging they could hear the other teens laughing. “You really shouldn’t have done that to them.” The smaller kids voice sounded different as they stared daggers into the taller boy’s eyes.

“Them…” the boy scoffed, “I only punched one mook… you.” He grinned as he went to punch again and the smaller kid dodged, grabbing his arm and throwing him over their shoulder.  As the taller kid went over their shoulder they elbowed him in the chest

“I suggest you take that as a warning and leave them alone,” the kid began walking more confidently than they had before.

“Get the lame freak!” the taller boy yelled as they watched the kid walk away.

“tch” the smaller one sighed as they looked back ready to fight. Getting into a stance they saw them drawing chains and knives. “Shit…” they spun around and began running hoping to make it across the large empty lot and to the auto shop before the others caught up.  They ran as fast as their legs would take them, dashing across the sand and dirt.  However, running with a cane is never too easy as the cane slipped in the sand causing them to come crashing down.

“Sorry sis,” the kid whispered barely loud enough to be heard, “I screwed up big this time.”

“Well looks like we have a lame duck,” the leader of the teens sounded pleased with himself as he approached the kid.  “Soon to be a dead one.”

“To me that sounds like you just threatened to kill that kid.” A girl’s voice came from nearby.

“So a little girl is here to save the cripple?!” the teens began laughing, the sounds getting closer as the kid tried to get up.

“Not just a little girl,” a deeper voice came as well, “thanks for pointing this out Errol.  It’s quite unfair for a group of teens like you to be picking on a little kid.  It’s another thing to threaten a kid’s life.”  The smaller kid finally turning over to see a group of eight people, three girls, three men, and two boys staring down the teens.  “I’d rather not fight a bunch of kids, but I don’t like people threatening others, so you have a choice, easy way or hard way.”

“They look pretty tough,” one of the teens gulped, the sound of chains clinking on the ground as the backed away slowly, “Id rather not fight em.”  One by one the teens fled until only their leader remained.

“Eh the freak isn’t worth it.” The boy scoffed as he began to sulk away.

“Are you okay,” one of the three girls asked as they walked over to the kid.
